Buffer Sizing in a Combined Input Output Queued (CIOQ) Switch

چکیده
In all internet routers buffers are needed to hold packets during times of congestion. In some recent work, the question of finding the minimum buffer size guaranteeing high throughput has been addressed [3] [6]. The answer to this question is particularly important in building all-optical routers, where the optical technology allows buffering up to a few dozen packets [7]. While in practice most high speed routers use input queued switches, the previous works have all focused on the problem of buffer sizing in output queued switches. In this work, we consider a combined input output queued switch in the core of a TCP network. Based on ns2 simulations and by adding a CIOQ switch to the simulation environment, we investigate how different parameters can affect the amount of buffering needed to have high link utilization.

Performance Evaluation of Combined Input Output Queued Switch with Finite Input and Output Buffers
It has recently been shown that a combined input output queued (CIOQ) switch with a speedup factor of 2 can exactly emulate an output-queued (OQ) switch [1]-[6]. In particular, the maximal matching algorithm, named Least Cushion First/Most Urgent First (LCF/MUF) algorithm presented in [6], can be executed in parallel to achieve exact emulation. However, the buffer size at every input and output...
متن کاملPacket scheduling in a combined input and output queued switch using virtual time reference system
There i s an increasing demand for Internet core nodes to have (I) quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees and (2) higher switching capacity. The combined input and output queued (CiOQ) switching has been shown to be a promising solution to meet such demand. However, many of the proposed scheduling algorithms fo r a CIOQ switch cannot be practically implemented due to problems from scalability and ...
متن کاملOn the Emulation of Finite-Buffered Output Queued Switches Using Combined Input-Output Queuing
Emulation of Output Queuing (OQ) switches using Combined Input-Output Queuing (CIOQ) switches has been studied extensively in the setting where the switch buffers have unlimited capacity. In this paper we study the general setting where the OQ switch and the CIOQ switch have finite buffer capacity B ≥ 1 packets at every output. We analyze the resource requirements of CIOQ policies in terms of t...
متن کاملImplementation of active queue management in a combined input and output queued switch
This paper investigates the implementation of a class of active queue management algorithms (AQM) whose measure of congestion includes packet arrival rate, such as REM and GREEN, in a combined input and output queued (CIOQ) switch. We propose a structure with one AQM per output port and we analyze the constraints on the switch fabric speed that this imposes. A two queue model of a CIOQ switch i...
متن کاملDesign of Modified RED Implemented in a Class Based CIOQ Switch
A Combined Input and Output Queued (CIOQ) switch with a certain speedup of S (1<S<N) can achieve 100% throughput and offer QoS guarantees. In this paper, we present the deployment of Random Early Detection (RED) on a CIOQ switch that has priority queues with shared buffer (class based switch). We first give an estimated model to concrete that one RED controller per output port is sufficient for...
